Race to the Playoffs: Analyzing the Scenarios in the Final Group Stage Games

With the league stage drawing to a close, the race for the playoffs is heating up. Given the top four teams advance to the knockout stage, the remaining seven matches are critical for almost every team.

The Frontrunners (Almost Qualified)

These teams are in the driving seat and only need one more win (or a favourable result elsewhere) to virtually guarantee a Top 4 spot.

1. Sudurpaschim Royals (10 PTS)

  • Status: Unbeaten and Qualified (Predicted).

  • What they need: A single win from their last two matches, or even a single point from a washout, guarantees them a spot. With 10 points already, they have a massive buffer. They are also heavy favourites to finish as table toppers, securing a valuable spot in Qualifier 1.

  • Key Remaining Matches: vs. Chitwan Rhinos (Dec 4), vs. Biratnagar Kings (Dec 6).

2. Kathmandu Gorkhas (8 PTS)

  • Status: Highly Likely to Qualify.

  • What they need: A win in their last match takes them to 10 points and officially seals their qualification. If they lose, they will be stuck on 8 points and their Net Run Rate (NRR) will become crucial against teams that finish on 8 points (e.g., Pokhara/Chitwan/Lumbini could reach 8 points with one more win, or 10 points with two wins). Given their one game remaining, a loss makes their position precarious.

  • Key Remaining Match: vs. Pokhara Avengers (Dec 4).

3. Biratnagar Kings (8 PTS)

  • Status: Highly Likely to Qualify.

  • What they need: One win from their two remaining fixtures will take them to 10 points and guarantee a playoff berth. Even one loss keeps them in a strong position, but they need to be mindful of their NRR if they lose both.

  • Key Remaining Matches: vs. Lumbini Lions (Dec 3), vs. Sudurpaschim Royals (Dec 6).

With the league stage drawing to a close, the race for the playoffs is heating up. Given a likely format where the top four teams advance to the knockout stage (standard for many eight-team T20 leagues), the remaining seven matches are critical for almost every team.

Here is the current table and a breakdown of each team's chances and requirements.

✅ The Frontrunners (Almost Qualified)

The Mid-Table Melee (The True Battle)

Three teams are tied on 4 points, all desperately needing at least two wins to feel safe, or a great NRR boost with one win. Realistically, at least one of these teams needs to reach 8 points to have a strong shot at the 4th spot.

4. Pokhara Avengers (4 PTS)

  • What they need: They have a tough schedule. Two wins (reaching 8 PTS) gives them a very good chance. One win might not be enough unless the other 4-point teams also struggle, and they secure a huge NRR boost. Their final game against Chitwan could be a virtual knockout.

  • Key Remaining Matches: vs. Kathmandu Gorkhas (Dec 4), vs. Chitwan Rhinos (Dec 6).

5. Chitwan Rhinos (4 PTS)

  • What they need: Similar to Pokhara, they need at least two wins (reaching 8 PTS). Their match against the unstoppable Royals is a huge challenge, meaning they must target the win against Pokhara Avengers. A win against the Royals would be a massive upset and a guaranteed boost to qualification.

  • Key Remaining Matches: vs. Sudurpaschim Royals (Dec 4), vs. Pokhara Avengers (Dec 6).

6. Lumbini Lions (4 PTS)

  • What they need: Two wins are mandatory (reaching 8 PTS) to be in contention, as their NRR is likely inferior to the frontrunners. A win against Biratnagar is crucial to keep their hopes alive before facing the Janakpur Bolts.

  • Key Remaining Matches: vs. Biratnagar Kings (Dec 3), vs. Janakpur Bolts (Dec 5).

The Long Shots (Playing for Pride/Spoilers)

These teams cannot reach the likely safe point total of 10 and are on the brink of elimination.

7. Karnali Yaks (2 PTS)

  • Status: Highly Likely to be Eliminated.

  • What they need: Their only path is to win their final game (reaching 4 PTS) and hope that the NRR of the teams currently on 4 points (Pokhara, Chitwan, Lumbini) is significantly worse. This is highly improbable as one of them needs to lose their last game to stay on 4 points. Their main role will be as a spoiler against Janakpur.

  • Key Remaining Match: vs. Janakpur Bolts (Dec 7).

8. Janakpur Bolts (2 PTS)

  • Status: Highly Likely to be Eliminated.

  • What they need: Even two wins only take them to 6 points, which is mathematically insufficient to qualify unless all three mid-table teams (Pokhara, Chitwan, Lumbini) lose their remaining two games, which is impossible due to the head-to-head match-up between Pokhara and Chitwan. They can, however, play a huge role in eliminating the Lumbini Lions.

  • Key Remaining Matches: vs. Lumbini Lions (Dec 5), vs. Karnali Yaks (Dec 7).

Playoff Prediction

Given the fixture list, the most probable Top 4 is:

  1. Sudurpaschim Royals (Likely 12-14 PTS)

  2. Biratnagar Kings (Likely 10-12 PTS)

  3. Kathmandu Gorkhas (Likely 8-10 PTS)

  4. The Winner of the Pokhara/Chitwan/Lumbini Race (Likely 8 PTS)

The most fascinating battle is for that 4th and final spot. The head-to-head between Pokhara Avengers and Chitwan Rhinos on December 6 is a virtual quarter-final. If Lumbini Lions can secure an upset against Biratnagar, they make the race a three-way tie for the 4th spot, assuming they also beat Janakpur. Given Chitwan has to face the royals, who has not lost a single game this season, the final game between Avengers and Rhinos will be do-or-die for both.
